Oral Health Affects Your Overall Wellness!

Did you know that there's a synergic relationship between your oral health and overall wellness? Taking good care of your teeth and gums do more than help ensure you have a bright, beautiful smile. Protect yourself by learning more about the connection between your oral health and overall health.

The connection between oral health and overall health

Like other areas of the body, many kinds of bacteria are present in our mouth— mostly harmless. Normally the body's natural defences and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Prolonged inflammation in the mouth can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. If you have a healthy immune system, the presence of oral bacteria in your bloodstream causes no problems. Your immune system quickly dispenses with them, preventing infection. However, if the immune system is weakened because of a disease or cancer treatment, oral bacteria in the bloodstream may cause to develop an infection in other parts of the body.

Certain medications reduce the saliva flow, which is one of our body's main defences against disease-causing organisms such as bacteria and viruses. Saliva contains Ig A antibodies that attack viral pathogens. It also contains certain proteins called histatins which inhibit oral fungal growth. Studies suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with a severe form of gum disease (periodontitis) might play a role in some diseases. And certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body's resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.

How can I protect my oral health?
To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Floss interdental areas daily.
  • Use mouthwash to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing.
  •  Eat a healthy diet, limit food with added sugars and drink plenty of water.
  •  Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
  • Avoid tobacco use.

Most importantly, visit your dentist twice a year for a detailed dental check-up and dental scaling (cleaning). Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.
